Common Diseases in Goats and Their Prevention

Goats are resilient animals, but they're susceptible to several diseases that can impact productivity. Early detection and prevention are key to maintaining a healthy herd.

Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR)

This highly contagious viral disease is the most serious threat to goats in Cameroon. Symptoms include fever, nasal discharge, diarrhea, and mouth sores. Vaccination is the best prevention method.

Internal Parasites

Worms are a constant challenge in tropical climates. Implement a regular deworming schedule every 3-4 months, rotating between different drug classes to prevent resistance.

Pneumonia

Respiratory infections are common during the rainy season. Ensure good ventilation in housing, avoid overcrowding, and vaccinate against pneumonia-causing bacteria.

Prevention Strategies

  • Maintain clean, dry housing
  • Provide adequate nutrition
  • Follow vaccination schedules
  • Quarantine new animals for 2-3 weeks
  • Regular health checks by a veterinarian
